Sunday 19 April 2009 - 1000 – 1800 hrs
On Sunday April 19, wine lovers will stroll past village houses built along the narrow old mule trails or drailles over which generations of merchants transported salt, dried fish, olive oil, meat, cheese, spices, herbs – and wine !
Those wandering from Cave to Cave tasting Montpeyroux’s great wines, enjoying music and good food, will be following in the footsteps of invading armies, pilgrims and traders who have passed through the village since Neolithic times.
Grapes have grown in Montpeyroux (from the Occitan for ‘stony mountain’) since the VIII century: originally encouraged by the Benedictine monks whose monasteries were established where grapes would thrive, the village has been producing Appelation d’Origine wines for over 50 years.
Today’s inspired and dedicated vignerons are using the same vaulted cellars of the same village houses to produce ever finer wines. Many are exported round the world, featuring on wine lists in the world’s top restaurants and collecting innumerable prizes in national and international competitions.
Montpeyroux has traditionally welcomed new people and new ideas. Today’s eclectic mix of vignerons includes families who have been in the village for centuries and newcomers with widely different backgrounds. Their different personalities are reflected in a fascinating range of quality wines for all tastes and all pockets.
It’s this alchemy between traditional values and modern tastes which will make 19 April a day to remember for all connoisseurs of the good things of life in the South of France.
